Apparel and footwear appears on the RELEX site under Consumer Packaged Goods & Manufacturing rather than under Retail, and the body copy on that page describes demand forecasting and budgeting, multi-site production allocation, capacity planning, and production scheduling — the vocabulary of making garments, not of buying a season.

RetailNorthstar plans the season before it exists. Line planning, seasonal open-to-buy, assortment architecture, buy planning, buy execution, and allocation are native workflows on one apparel data model — style, color, size, fabrication, silhouette, and fit are fields, not attributes you configure into a generic hierarchy.
The defaults are the point: apparel hierarchy, seasonal structure with pre-season, in-season and carry-over, size curves planned at style or category level, and the metrics merchandising teams actually run on — sell-through, weeks of supply, initial markup against target, and open-to-buy by channel and season. Teams are live in weeks, and the people running the plan day to day are the merchants themselves.

What we are not going to pretend
A comparison page that concedes nothing is worthless to a buyer, and most of what follows is one search away anyway. So, plainly: RELEX runs apparel retail workloads in production today. Marimekko, a Finnish design house selling fashion ranges, bags, accessories, and homewares, has run centralized planning and automated replenishment on RELEX since 2013. Kiabi, a European fast-fashion chain RELEX puts at roughly 500 stores, runs demand forecasting and integrated replenishment across stores, distribution centres, and e-commerce. RELEX customer material also names DistriCenter — a French fashion retailer with more than 170 stores, using forecasting, replenishment, allocation, and promotion planning — alongside Carhartt and Oniverse. Anyone telling you RELEX has no fashion footprint has not checked.
The narrow distinction that actually survives scrutiny: we did not find a published merchandise financial planning or line planning customer story in apparel in the RELEX material we searched. RELEX runs the replenishment, allocation, and store-assortment side of fashion retail. The pre-season merchandising decision — what to make, how many options, how deep, at what markup — is not what its published apparel material is about.
Forecasting and replenishment engineering
Two decades of in-memory architecture running store-SKU-day forecasting across networks measured in tens of thousands of sites. A mid-market merchandising tool is not competing at that engineering tier, and should not claim to.

Since December 2025, the Sizeo partnership lets RELEX customers plan by style, color, size, and location with store- and region-specific size ratios and pre-pack configuration. It exists and it works.
Business-user extensibility
RELEX says business users can design and deploy new capabilities in hours using Rebot and its Plugin Framework, without waiting on a vendor release cycle. That is a RELEX claim rather than something we have tested, but it is the direct answer to any configuration-burden objection, so it belongs on this page rather than being left out of it.
Fast deployments are possible
The PetXL case study — 15 stores, one distribution centre, 10,000 SKUs — went live in about six months. Nobody should tell you RELEX is inherently slow or enterprise-only.
Manufacturing and production planning
Genuine depth in capacity planning, factory assignment, and production scheduling with learning-curve modelling. For a vertically integrated apparel manufacturer, that is real capability we do not have.
Company scale and durability
Founded in Finland in 2005 by Mikko Kärkkäinen, Johanna Småros, and Michael Falck, with Kärkkäinen still chief executive. More than 2,300 employees across 20 offices in 21 countries, more than 600 customers, subscription revenue growth of 30 percent year over year in the first half of 2025 on top of 37 percent in the first half of 2024, and backing from Blackstone and TCV. Vendor viability is a fair thing for a buyer to weigh, and on that measure RELEX is not the risk in the room.

RELEX genuinely wins on forecasting and replenishment at network scale, on space and planogram work, and on pricing science — three rows above are conceded outright. RetailNorthstar wins on the pre-season merchandising decision that sits upstream of all of it: the option plan, the seasonal open-to-buy, the size curve, and the exit.
Replenishment math versus pre-season math
Every planning platform advertises a primitive — the object its published workflows are written to plan. On RELEX's own solution pages that object is a SKU that sells at a knowable rate and gets reordered: forecast demand at store-SKU-day, hold the right cover, replenish automatically, and shape the shelf around it. That is the decision those pages describe, and it lines up with where RELEX is strongest — grocery, convenience, pharmacy, DIY, and pet. It is a genuinely hard engineering problem solved well.
Apparel breaks that primitive at the first step. The style-color you are committing to has never sold anything. There is no history, the assortment is largely new every drop, most options will never be reordered, and the money is committed months before the first unit scans. The season is a bet placed pre-season, then chased in season against sell-through. Nothing stops a platform built around that primitive from being pointed at the pre-season problem — but the problem it advertises solving is a different one. RELEX's own solution pages describe forecasting demand for products that sell at an observable rate, replenishing them, and shaping the shelf around them; the pre-season commitment, where there is no rate to observe yet, is not the decision those pages are written about.

We also did not find RELEX guidance on what an ongoing planning team has to look like, and we are not going to invent one: its own PetXL case study runs 15 stores and one distribution centre, so there is no basis for calling RELEX an enterprise-only commitment. Yes, and any comparison claiming otherwise is wrong. RELEX publishes fashion-retail evidence. Marimekko has run centralized planning and automated replenishment on RELEX since 2013. Kiabi, a European fast-fashion chain, runs demand forecasting and integrated replenishment across its stores, distribution centres, and e-commerce. DistriCenter, a French fashion retailer with more than 170 stores, runs forecasting, replenishment, allocation, and promotion planning. What we did not find in the RELEX material we searched is a published merchandise financial planning or line planning customer story in apparel. Its apparel and footwear page sits under Consumer Packaged Goods and Manufacturing, and that page body copy is written for production operations — demand forecasting and budgeting, multi-site production allocation, capacity planning, production scheduling, and factory assignment. The honest read is that RELEX runs apparel replenishment and allocation in production today, and that the pre-season merchandising decision is not something we found positioned in the material we searched.

Apparel assortment planning happens upstream of shelf space: how many options to carry by category, depth versus breadth, good/better/best price tiering, carryover versus newness, and how deliveries flow across the season. Same word, different decision, different math.
Can RELEX plan by size and pre-pack for fashion?
Yes, through a partner. RELEX and Sizeo announced a partnership in December 2025 that lets RELEX customers plan by style, color, size, and location with store- and region-specific size ratios and pre-pack configuration. That capability is real and available today, so it should not be argued away. The distinction worth weighing is native versus extended. In RetailNorthstar, size curve planning is part of the core product — you plan size ratios at style or category level, apply them automatically across the buy plan, and track in-season size performance against plan, without a second vendor, a second contract, or an integration to maintain between the size engine and the buy.

Where a detail could not be sourced precisely we leave the number out rather than estimating it — the bp rollout duration is the case in point, cited for scale but not for length — and where a claim originates with the vendor — Rebot and the Plugin Framework, customer store counts, company growth rates — we attribute it to RELEX rather than presenting it as independent. We do not have hands-on access to a RELEX production environment, so nothing here is a hands-on product review. RetailNorthstar rows describe our own shipping product. This is a vendor-authored comparison, and it should be read alongside RELEX material, not instead of it.
